SAS strikes at weapons of mass destruction: forces chief

Australia's elite Special Air Service troops are in Iraq and have struck at "command and control nodes" linked with Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, according to the commander of Australian forces in the Persian Gulf.

Brigadier Maurie McNairn has given the first briefing on the activities of his troops.

Brigadier McNairn says the SAS has been in Iraq for several days after receiving its orders from the Government.

"They are deep inside Iraq. Their primary role is strategic reconnaissance, although in some cases where there are command and control nodes which are used for communications controlling WMD [weapons of mass destruction], we will, and in some cases have, taken direct action against those," he said.

"They are probably in as far and more so than anyone else at the moment, doing that strategic reconnaissance role."
